Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery in India
Coronary arteries become narrow by atherosclerosis which means fatty deposits,
cholesterol, calcium and blood clots. This is called as coronary artery disease.
This could give rise to chest pain (angina) and
breathlessness on exertion; or acute, causing acute myocardial infarction
which is the heart attack.
Bypass grafting of coronary artery restores blood flow to the heart muscle by
adding a bypass graft (vein or artery) to bypass the blocked area in the
heart. This is usually performed through an incision down the middle of the
breastbone, it can also occasionally be performed through an incision
below the nipple on the left side, this process is medically known as
thoracotomy.
The Heart and Lung machine is also brought to use during the process of
pulmonary bypass. This enables the maintenance of blood flow to the body while
the heart is being operated on.
You may be connected to a heart lung machine. There is also a process of By
Pass surgery on the beating heart.
Aortic Surgery
The main blood vessel which runs from the heart supplying blood to the
body is called aorta. Surgery of the Aorta is undertaken to replace the segment of
the aorta which is diseased.
Heart Valve Surgery in India
The four valves which comprises of our heart make the blood to
flow in a unidirectional way. Sometimes the valves become narrow and the
flow of blood is reduced. Under these conditions there is a valve replacement
procedure which is being conducted.
There are two types of replacement valves. One is a tissue valve (bioprosthesis) made from the aortic valve of a pig or the sack around the heart of a cow (pericardium). The other type is a mechanical valve that is made from a very durable material called pyrolytic carbon.
The Cardiac surgeon makes a decision of the kind of valve to be replaced as
per the need of the treatment. This procedure demands the use of the heart lung machine (cardiopulmonary bypass) for heart valve
surgery.
There are numerous such cardiac surgeries that are being conducted in India
and Patients from the world over visit India to their treatments.
